The Equine Medical Service Veterinarians:  Get to know the people working on your horse

Dr. Jay Altman

Dr. Altman has a life long history in the world of horses.  In his early years he worked on ranches and farms in Oklahoma, Colorado, California, and along the east-coast states.  In the early 1970's he received his farrier's certification from Oklahoma Farriers College.  After certification, he spent time as an instructor at the college, which was located in Sperry, Oklahoma.  He then traveled to the east coast to shoe racehorses at Freehold Raceway in Freehold, New Jersey.  After working as a farrier on the east coast, he returned to Colorado to attend Colorado State University, where he studied animal science with the intent to enter veterinary medicine.

Once undergraduate studies were completed at CSU, he went on to Michigan State University to enter a graduate program in reproductive physiology.  A turn of events changed his educational plans and he entered the business world for a number of years.  Through those years he continued to own and raise sport horses, and ride hunters and jumpers as a hobby.

He returned to Colorado in 1989, to enter school in veterinary medicine.  After completion of veterinary school he moved to Pennsylvania to begin a position as staff veterinarian and practice manager of Penn Paddock Equine Center.  Penn Paddock, a five doctor equine practice, specialized in racing thoroughbreds and sport horses, and was the area's referral surgical facility.  He then returned to Colorado to begin Equine Medical Service, an equine exclusive veterinary practice originally based in LaPorte.  October of 2000, he purchased Large Animal Veterinary Services, and integrated the two practices, which are now known as Equine Medical Service.

Dr. Altman specializes in equine dentistry and lameness, and enjoys working on medicine as well as surgical cases.  Dr. Altman, and his wife, Mardie, have four children ages 14 through 22, seven horses, four dogs, and four cats.

Dr. Allen Landes

Dr. Landes was born and raised on a ranch in Monte Vista, Colorado.  Besides working with horse and mules as a teenager, he rode both bareback and saddle bronc horses.  He then entered the armed forces and was stationed in Europe, where he persisted in riding rough stock.  He loved the connection with horses.  Once he completed his tour of duty with the military, he returned to Colorado to work on a Paint and Quarter horse breeding and show facility, while planning a career in veterinary medicine.

In the late 1980's, he entered school and received his degree in veterinary medicine from Colorado State University.  After graduating with his doctorate he moved to Illinois for an opportunity to work in a mixed practice.  There he was able to assume the primary role as small animal surgeon and equine emergency clinician.  His goal to work in an exclusively equine environment took him to a multi-doctor equine specialty practice in Frankfort, Illinois.  Through this new practice environment he was able to concentrate his focus and begin to specialize in equine reproduction, medicine, and dentistry.

In April of 2001, Dr. Landes and his family returned to Fort Collins and he joined Equine Medical Service as one of the three staff practitioners.  He currently focuses on medical cases and has an intense interest in lameness diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Landes has three children, three horses, three dogs, and a herd of cats! He continues with horses as a hobby through trail riding, team penning, and would like to try some working cow horse competitions.

Dr. J. Raye Harris:

Dr. Harris was raised mostly in Colorado.  While growing up she was involved with 4-H groups and a drill team.  She continued riding mostly western pleasure throughout her high school years.

During her early years of college in Santa Barbara, California, she began working with a horse veterinarian.  Aspiring to be a vet, she moved back to Colorado to attend CSU's equine science program and veterinary college.

After college, she moved to Texas to work at the 6666 ranch to foal out racing QH mares and assist with the breeding program.  During this time she had the fortune to work with some famous race horses, Dash for Cash and Streakin Six.  Once the breeding season was over at the 6666 ranch, she moved to Austin for a year to work in a well-known equine hospital, assisting daily with surgeries, lameness work, etc.

After receiving her doctorate degree from CSU, she moved to South Carolina to work at an exclusively equine sport horse practice.  The practice was located in the town of Camden, where almost the entire population is working in the horse industry.  Camden has a reputation as being a mecca for horse trainers from all disciplines because of the mild winters and soft sandy soils.  This was great fun for Dr. Harris, to be working with so many highly trained athletes including a large number of racehorses, and steeplechase horses in training.

Always being a Coloradoan at heart, she eventually decided to move back to Colorado and join Equine Medical Service.  Since then, she is enjoying the work and has a keen interest in wellness of the horses here in Fort Collins, having enthusiasm for lameness work as well as general medicine.
