The Doctors at Equine Medical Service

Dr. Jay Altman:

Dr. Jay Altman

Dr. Altman has a life long history in the world of horses.  In his early years he worked on ranches and farms in Oklahoma, Colorado, California, and along the east-coast states.  In the early 1970's he received his farriers certification from Oklahoma Farriers College.  After certification, he spent time as an instructor at the college, which was located in Sperry, Oklahoma.  He then traveled to the east coast to shoe racehorses at Freehold Raceway in Freehold, New Jersey.  After working as a farrier on the east coast, he returned to Colorado to attend Colorado State University, where he studied animal science with the intent to enter veterinary medicine.

Once undergraduate studies were completed at CSU, he went on to Michigan State University to enter a graduate program in reproductive physiology.  Through those years, he continued to own and raise sport horses, and ride hunters and jumpers as a hobby.

He returned to Colorado in 1989, to enter school in veterinary medicine.  After completion of veterinary school he moved to Pennsylvania to enter a position as staff veterinarian and practice manager of Penn Paddock Equine Center.  Penn Paddock, a five doctor equine practice, specialized in racing thoroughbreds and sport horses, and was the area's referral surgical facility.  He then returned to Colorado to begin Equine Medical Service, an equine exclusive veterinary practice based in LaPorte.  October of 2000, he purchased Large Animal Veterinary Services, and integrated the two practices, which are now known as Equine Medical Service.

Dr. Altman specializes in equine dentistry and lameness, and enjoys working on medicine as well as surgical cases.

Dr. Allen Landes:

Dr. Allen Landes

Dr. Landes was born and raised on a ranch in Monte Vista, Colorado.  Besides working with horses and mules as a teenager, he rode both bareback and saddle bronc horses.  He then entered the armed forces.  While stationed in Europe, he continued riding rough stock.  He loved the connection with horses.  Once he completed his tour of duty with the military, he returned to Colorado to work in a Paint and Quarter horse breeding and show facility, while planning a career in veterinary medicine.

In the late 1980's, he entered school and received his degree in veterinary medicine from Colorado State University.  After graduating with his doctorate, he moved to Illinois for an opportunity to work in a mixed practice.  There he was able to assume the primary role as small animal surgeon and equine emergency clinician.  His goal to work in an exclusively equine environment took him to a multi-doctor equine specialty practice in Frankfort, Illinois.  Through this new practice environment, he was able to concentrate his focus and begin to specialize in equine reproduction, medicine, and dentistry.

In April of 2001, Dr. Landes and his family returned to Fort Collins and he joined Equine Medical Service as one of the staff practitioners.  He currently focuses on medical cases and has an intense interest in reproduction and surgery.

Ezekial Altman:

Ezekial Altman

Ezekial, "Zeke", is a full time student at Colorado State University.  He is currently studying computer information systems with a minor in business management.  He has been a part time member of the staff since 2002 and has held many different positions. He currently manages the bookkeeping and information systems. His knowledge of computers and software has helped us to keep our office up to date with technology.  He fills in on the telephones from time to time and even helps us in the clinic with assistant responsibilities when needed.  Although not involved with horses at this time, Zeke has grown up with horses, ridden for years, and been a member of The American Pony Club.  If quizzed about horse ownership his reaction would probably make mention of; stacking more hay then he would like to remember.

Miriam Altman:

Miriam Altman

Miriam Altman has been working for Equine Medical Service on a part time basis, over the past 3 years.  Her responsibilities have been varied and have included newsletter and advertising design and organization, general office duties, laboratory technician help, horse handling, as well as clinic repair and maintenance.  Miriam is currently enrolled in building trades coursework at Front Range Community College and is working part time with a home remodeling crew, here in Fort Collins.  She owns two horses, has ridden hunters and jumpers in the past and is currently working to learn both barrel racing and roping, while considering her options for college for the 2005/2006 school year.
